Integrated Circuit Design at Aalto University Department of Micro and Nano Sciences

Aalto University, School of Science and Technology, Department of the Micro and Nanosciences (former Electronic Circuit Design
Laboratory, ECDL) is a leading research laboratory in the field of integrated circuit design in Finland. This talk will briefly go through
the ECDL’s history and current activities. The research of the department’s low-power group will then be presented in more detail with the talk concentrating on Timing Error Detection (TED) in the subthreshold operating region and mixed-mode vision processing. The operation of a current-mode TED-latch will be shown. The MIPA4k, a 64×64
cell mixed-mode image processor array chip developed at the University of Turku will also be introduced along with an application specific variant of the processor.
Lauri Koskinen received his Ph.D. from the Helsinki University of Technology (current Aalto University) in 2005. He is currently a Fulbright visiting scholar at the Berkeley Wireless Research Center (BWRC) of UC Berkeley, he holds a post-doc position at the Electronic Circuit Design Laboratory (ECDL) of the Department of Micro- and
Nanosciences (MNT) at Aalto University School of Science and Technology and an Adjunct Professorship at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of University of Turku. He is also an Academy of Finland post-doc until the end of 2010. His research interests are in mixed-mode
ultra-low-power technology, with applications in vision processing.
