Battery-in-the-Loop: Battery-Aware Energy Management in Cyber-Physical Systems

Dr. Liang HeResearch ScientistSingapore University of Technology and Design, Singapore

Batteries are widely adopted in many Cyber-Physical
Systems(CPSs) such as electric vehicles, aircraft, and mobile devices
including smartphones and tablets. Efficient battery-aware energy
management protocols are highly demanded for system optimization because
of the non-linear battery properties and the limited energy storage
capacity. In this talk, I will introduce our recent advancements in the
battery-aware energy management for CPSs powered by large-scale battery packs, e.g., electric vehicles. Specifically, we explored
the concept and implementation of reconfigurable battery packs in which
the connectivity among battery cells can be actively controlled according
to the real-time requirements, and demonstrated its efficiency in
improving the system performance during both the battery charging and
discharging process. I will also highlight several future investigation directions
such as the state-of-health-based battery discharge management and battery
pack reliability analysis.
Dr. Liang He received his B.Eng. degree in 2006 and Ph.D.
degree in 2011, both in Computer Science, from Tianjin University and
Nankai University, China, respectively. During Oct. 2009 to Oct. 2011, he
visited University of Victoria, Canada, for his PhD thesis research under
the supervision of Dr. Jianping Pan. He is currently a research scientist
at Singapore University of Technology and Design, Singapore. He is a
recipient of the best paper awards of IEEE WCSP 2011 and IEEE GLOBECOM
2011. He has been invited to the Global Young Scientists Summit 2013 by
Dr. Tony Tan, the president of Singapore. His current research interest
mainly resides in mobile wireless sensor networks and energy-efficient
cyber-physical systems.
